During the week of Sept. 14-20, island police arrested 20 motorists for driving under the influence. Six were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

During the week of Sept. 14-20, island police arrested 20 motorists for driving under the influence. Six were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 10; Puna and South Hilo, five each.

So far this year, there have been 763 DUI arrests compared to 840 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.2 percent.

There have been 1,082 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,147 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.7 percent.

So far this year, there have been 15 official traffic fatalities compared with nine during the same period last year, an increase of 66.7 percent.

To date, nine of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — six to drugs and three to a combination of drugs and alcohol.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
